Nan Funkhouser didn’t own a horse of her own until she was 28, but has been making up for lost time ever since. She started in the hunter arena, moved on to fox hunting with the Fort Leavenworth Hunt, and entered the dressage arena shortly after that. Instantly intrigued by the possibilities that dressage has to offer, she worked with Jana Wagner and Heather Blitz for 10 years. Always dissatisfied with the lack of freedom on the horse’s behalf, she finally found what she had been looking for in Harry Whitney and his wisdom of “directing the horse’s thought” after being introduced to him by Joy Casady, her last traditional dressage instructor. Her favorite Harry quote is “If you have a horse’s thought, you have his feet. A thought weighs nothing.” Nan has spent her life as a professional musician and barn owner specializing in teaching people to start their own horses under saddle and to be their own trainers, along with raising Trakehner horses. She was the judge at the first-ever Cowboy Dressage Show (93 rides) in the state of Kansas in October 2013. She holds an Animal Health Tech degree and is a NAET practitioner for animals. Nan’s favorite clinicians have been Harry Whitney, J. Ashton Moore, Linda Tellington-Jones, David Wightman, Heather Blitz, and of course Eitan Beth-Halachmy. She has served on the boards of the Kansas City Dressage Society (Education Chair) and Longview Horse Park. Nan is located in the Kansas City/Topeka area.Nan is available for private lessons in Cowboy DressageTM, eventing and ground work.
